Amazon is already degraded by 50%
The Amazon is already degraded by 50% and it appears that the 2030 would be devastated by 90%, according to the latest 'Peruvian Amazon to 2021'.
"There is a huge risk of losing checked our greatest asset and our shield climate change and people are not aware," warns from Tarapoto, Antonio Zambrano, representative of the Citizen Movement from Climate Change (MOCICC).
Just to draw attention to this issue, on 20 and 21 March Environment Forum was held in the Amazonian city of Tarapoto which was sponsored by the MOCICC. This important meeting takes place on the eve of World Water Day, celebrated on 22 March each year. It should be noted that the Amazon produces 20% of global freshwater resources, so it is important to preserve.
This meeting was organized by various organizations like the Institute for Development and Peace Amazon (IDPA), Regional Government of San Martín (GORESAM), Universidad Nacional de San Martin, Red Agroforestry in the Peruvian Amazon, Civic Front for Defense and Development San Martin (FRECIDES), Ethnic Council Kechua Amazonian Peoples (Cepko) Action Network Alternative Agriculture (RAAA) and the Committee of Struggle Barranquita district.
During the Amazonian Environment Forum took civil society organizations, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Environment, professional associations, municipalities, private sector, etc..
It should be noted that conservation of the Amazon is important because its large diversity of plant produces 40% of the oxygen on the planet, constantly cleans the air of constant hazards such as nitrogen oxides and 20 billion tons evaporated water per day.
Besides sheltering more than 3 million people (of different ethnicities and cultures) and more than 420 different indigenous peoples, 86 languages, 650 dialects which have kept the Amazonian cultural identity and ancestral knowledge. |
